A study published in the Journal of Social Psychology found that people who wore formal clothing, such as a suit, were perceived as more competent, confident, and trustworthy compared to those who dressed casually. Whilst a survey conducted by the career website Monster found that 65% of employers said that dressing professionally, including wearing a suit, can have a positive impact on a person’s chances of getting a job. So trying to ace that first impression could be a key factor in securing that dream job.

The Outfit

A suit is a classic and safe option for an interview. Even if you’re going for a job in a more relaxed company, it shows you take the position, and the interviewers time seriously. Go for a dark, solid-colored suit such as navy blue or charcoal grey. You may think wearing a black suit would be a go to, but it can read as been too formal. It’s important that the suit fits you well, as a well-fitted suit can make you look sharp and confident. Avoid anything too flashy or with patterns that are too loud. If you want to show a bit of flare, show it in the lining! It will give a splash of personality whilst keeping it professional.

Pair with a crisp, freshly ironed white shirt. It may seem like a small detail but it can look so sloppy and unprofessional if your shirt is covered in creases. A tie is optional, but if you choose to wear one, keep it simple and classic. Choose a tie that matches your suit or shirt in colour. Avoid anything with bright colours or bold patterns, as you want to keep the focus on you and your qualifications.

The Accessories

Your shoes say a lot about you, so it’s important to choose wisely. Opt for a classic and polished leather shoe, such as Oxfords, derbies, or loafers. Make sure they’re clean and in good condition, as scuffed or dirty shoes can give off the wrong impression. A quick polish can make all the difference.
